Human Resources Director (Open WRVB VA Location)

Job Summary:

The Director of Human Resources provides executive-level leadership and guidance to the firm’s HR operations, including compensation and benefits and recruiting, and assists the Executive Director in other matters affecting firm administration. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for setting, enforcing, and evaluating legally compliant human resources policies, procedures, and best practices; identifying and implementing long-range strategic talent management goals; developing and implementing other firm policies and procedures; and performing other administration duties. The position is a hands-on, working Director role, in addition to managing others.


  • Works closely with the Executive Director to execute top-level administrative functions for the firm, including matters affecting general firm policies, staffing, recruitment, retention, compliance matters, office operations, and other firm matters.
  • Supervises the Director of Compensation and Benefits and Recruiting Manager.
  • Oversees staff personnel matters.
  • Supervises office managers with regard to staffing, scheduling, discipline, and other personnel issues.
  • Develop and implement performance management systems, such as performance evaluations.
  • Serve as the firm’s compliance officer for HR matters.
  • Conduct workplace investigations.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to identify ways to support the firm’s goals through talent management.
  • Provides guidance to firm leadership on HR and other matters.
  • Ensures compliance with employment, benefits, insurance, safety, and other laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices in employment law, human resources, and talent management.
  • Drafts and implements the budget for the human resource department.
  • Participates in professional development and networking conferences and events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least ten years of human resource management experience required, with strategic, talent management, and/or business development experience highly preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a law firm setting preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • In-person performance; remote work is not feasible except in limited circumstances.
  • Frequent car travel to firm’s other offices throughout Virginia.
