William (Will) H. Shewmake

Will works out of the firm’s Richmond office to support clients across Virginia and is a member of the Commercial Real Estate and Construction groups. Will uses his deep understanding of zoning and land use law to advise clients on commercial and residential land use issues.

Will also handles complex commercial, administrative, construction, and injury cases as a civil litigator. In addition, he is a trained collaborative law practitioner and has been recognized as a Virginia Business “Legal Elite” in the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) category. He has mediated a wide range of civil law matters and served as an arbitrator in commercial disputes involving closely held businesses. Will’s clients benefit from his extensive experience with alternative dispute resolutions, especially when ADR is used to obtain rezoning and conditional use permits.

Will is a past chairman of the Joint Alternative Dispute Resolution Council of the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. He authored and co-authored articles on covenants not to compete, administrative and antitrust law, and has lectured on appellate practice and trial litigation.

Will received his Bachelor of Arts from the College William & Mary and his law degree from William & Mary Law School. While there, he was a member of the Order of the Coif and was an editor of the William and Mary Law Review.

In addition to his professional affiliations, Will is active in the community. He has served on Chesterfield County’s Planning Commission, on the Advisory Committee for Gifted Education, the Committee on the Future, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, as well as the Commonwealth Attorney’s Drug and Violence Task Force. He has also served on the Boards of Directors for Huguenot Little League, Midlothian YMCA, Midlothian Rotary Club, and the Midlothian Rotary Foundation.
